Poem Sculptures

An artist’s imagination is often fuelled by his environment. Consciously or unconsciously, he takes scenes or objects from daily life and celebrates them through his work. Pune-based sculptor Prabhakar Singh was born and brought up in village, in family of farmers, where he observed many artisans and craftsmen who embell ished implements or other objects beyond functional requirements. In an intricately detailed series of mini-sculptures , he began with depicting the movements of people from his childhood, then expanded his scope to include the things he saw around him later in life, lending them the uniqueness of his perspective and aesthetic abilities.

Body Mould Series

His latest series on Heads/faces, of almost twenty sculptures, is full of experimentations of textures and medium. Here too, he is trying to break the solidity of sculptural technique and maintaining the hollow structure. Exterior and interior form their own equations, where every object stuck in the sculpture has a story to tell. Variations in the sizes of the shining brass balls, adorning the inner structure of the head, confined in poet’s brain by spiral rods, is the depiction of numerous thoughts going on in poet’s mind. Housewife, three feet high, is a female head, made up of iron and stainless steel and has been a part of National Art Exhibition by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, 2018.

Mural Series

The artistic oeuvre of Prabhakar Singh coalesce myriad thought processes, contemplations and media into a combined ecstatic visual allegory. The artist is well versed in transforming found metal/scrap or pieces/patterns into strongly assembled visual dialogues .His larger than life sized works exemplify his strengths as a gifted sculptor and yet in the present series as he turns towards small, mini sculptures combined/mounted with canvass, he proves that versatility is one of his major strengths. The boldness required while executing and assembling large/huge structures gets transformed into a delicate sensitivity and finesse required while working in smaller format.

Apple Series

Pune’s Prabhakar Singh is one remarkable sculptor. Sculpture is conventionally bound by weight and mass and defied by gravity. Singh rebelled and created translucent, airy sculpture which offers doors to perceive both the outside and the inside. We feel yes, this is the mysterious interior and these apples appear free of heavy mass. One whimsically peeled apple looks almost as if it is gravity free. His work is good and made with readily available material like metal triangles, circles, nuts and bolts. He makes natural shapes in clay, places welded metal pieces on them and painstakingly shapes the metal structure to match and meet his expectation of light, see-through sculpture. He designs manmade material into natural shapes and provides not mere novelty but pleasure.

Portraits
